Cocoa guide

EUDR for cocoa

Cocoa supply chains often involve many farms, intermediaries and mixed batches. The core compliance challenge is making origin evidence complete and traceable to the relevant product.

Cocoa product scope

Cocoa and specified cocoa-derived products are included through Annex I. Confirm the exact CN code rather than relying on the product name alone.

Why cocoa geolocation is difficult

Cocoa supply chains can aggregate beans from many farms. The operator needs a defensible link between the product and all relevant production plots that supplied it.

Evidence to collect

  • Farmer / producer identity where relevant.
  • Plot coordinates or polygons.
  • Country and production location.
  • Batch or lot traceability through aggregators.
  • Legality and deforestation-free supporting records.
  • Supplier declarations that can be checked against underlying data.
Aggregation risk: a warehouse or cooperative location is not a substitute for production-plot geolocation.

Recommended control

Build a supplier evidence file that keeps farm, plot, batch and shipment records aligned. Use the GeoJSON validator before you try to submit location data into the EUDR workflow.
